Acceptable Technology Use Policy

Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for the Internet

Every school that has technology to which the students have access must have an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). An AUP promotes safe and responsible use of the Internet and technology devices to include computers, cell phones, iPads, tablets or any device that can access the Internet. The AUP defines guidelines for appropriate use of the Internet by both faculty and staff as well as students. This includes Internet searches, downloads, email, gaming, and proper online behavior as well as the consequences for misusing the Internet. An AUP also provides schools with legal protection from liability.

The National Education Association (NEA) suggests that a school AUP contains the following 6 elements

  • A Preamble to explain how the AUP goals were determined
  • Definition of goals and terms used
  • Policy Statement explaining what computer services students can use
  • Acceptable use
  • Unacceptable use (specific)
  • Violations/Sanctions defining procedures for reporting policy violations and how to handle them

This video, form Centinela Valley Union High School District in Lawndale, CA, is a great example of how to present a school/district AUP through video.
